Firewalking: It’s not exactly a pastime you’d associate with me. Yet here’s the twist: the part of me that would say ‘yes’ to such a daring venture is the same part that’s audacious enough to dream. To challenge. To go beyond the ordinary.

Firstly what is firewalking? Firewalking is an ancient practice steeped in symbolism and deep cultural significance, but at its core, it is the act of walking barefoot over a bed of hot embers or stones. Rooted in various spiritual and healing traditions across the world, firewalking serves as a profound metaphor for overcoming fears, challenging personal limits, and awakening inner strength. The intense heat of the coals represents the hurdles and adversities we face in life, while the act of walking unscathed symbolises our innate ability to confront and conquer these obstacles. By harnessing the power of belief and mental fortitude, firewalking offers a unique and transformative journey towards personal growth and self-discovery.

So how does this all line up? Well, recently I had the extraordinary privilege of immersing myself in an event led by the charismatic Cobus THE VIKING Visser. On the 27th of May 2023 and the Centurion Golf Estate became my theatre of self-realisation and discovery.

The proposition was simple: a firewalk. But the implications were daunting. Walking on fire? What in the name of Protea was I thinking? Yet, there was an irresistible allure, a magnetic pull that made me wonder, “When do we begin?

No amount of mental preparation can truly ready you for the actual experience. The evening opened like a scene from a grand festival, filled with drums beating a primal rhythm, voices singing in harmony, and bodies swaying in unison. The spirit was electric, our minds tuned to the frequency of adventure. Why? Because we had the legendary Isaac Gwala Seroke to get us into the spirit right from the start.

Cobus graced the stage, his presence as commanding as a Viking chieftain. But instead of mouthing clichéd platitudes, he narrated his raw, authentic journey, which resonated deeply within all of us. His words wove an invisible bond, linking our hearts and evoking a profound sense of unity.

The celebration escalated with jubilant dances, heartfelt embraces, and mounting anticipation for the firewalk. Yet, Cobus pulled a surprise from his arsenal: a mat of shattered glass. You could almost hear the collective hearts stop, as shock morphed into excitement. With Elaine’s (Cobus’s partner) support, I chose to step up, leaving trepidation behind.

Each step on the glass was a revelation. From awe to fear to triumph, it was an emotional whirlwind, breaking down invisible walls and forging connections that transcended the ordinary. The shared victory over a once daunting task turned strangers into comrades, the experience a tangible testament to our inner power.

Finally, the moment arrived. Before us lay a strip of blazing coals, shimmering like a river of molten gold. Cobus guided us through a moment of introspection, nudging us to delve deeper into our intentions and goals. Hand on heart, eyes closed and simply living in the moment to understand why we are doing this.

The firewalk was an overwhelming encounter with my own daring spirit. The first walk was a jolt of adrenaline, the second a wave of empowerment. And the third? My heart had already declared its victory, content with the exhilarating achievement of crossing the fiery path twice. I received far more from this moment than what I initially expected.

In the grand scheme of life, firewalking was not merely an act of physical courage. It was a mirror into my own soul, a catalyst for transformation, pushing me beyond perceived limits and revealing a reservoir of strength I never knew I possessed.

This experience sparked a profound introspection, leading me to question, to explore, to seek my own truth. It unveiled the profound realisation that the only limitations are the ones we set for ourselves.

This journey into the fire was a transformative process, where I learnt that with enough passion and determination, I can indeed conquer the seemingly impossible. It reinforced my belief in the boundless potential that lies within each of us, waiting to be discovered.

So, my amazing readers, as you step into your own fires, remember: The flames are not meant to consume you, but to ignite your spirit. It’s in the heart of the fire that we find our true selves. And believe me, that discovery is worth every step you take.

I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Cobus Visser for extending the invitation to be a part of such a transformative event. I also want to thank each and every attendee for making the experience unforgettable. I am immensely proud of all of you for your courage and commitment – you truly made this event extraordinary.
