There’s something magical about December theatre in Cape Town — that mix of festive sparkle, young talent, and a story that makes you believe in courage all over again. This year, the Sonwa Sakuba Institute for the Performing Arts (SSIPA) is bringing that magic to life with Disney’s Moana Jr, its Cape Town debut production running from 16 to 23 December 2025 at Theatre Arts in Observatory. With daily performances at 11:00 and 19:00, this one-week-only run promises heart, humour, and a whole lot of ocean-sized adventure.
Based on Disney’s beloved animated hit, Moana Jr tells the story of a brave young girl who sets sail across the sea to save her island and discover who she truly is. The show features a cast of talented kids aged 6 to 18, each proving that when it comes to courage and creativity, age is just a number. Audiences can look forward to all the songs they know and love from the original film — including How Far I’ll Go, You’re Welcome, and Shiny Heart — written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina.
At the helm of this production is Sonwa Sakuba — director, choreographer, performer, and founder of SSIPA — whose artistic vision has left a mark on South African theatre through acclaimed productions such as SARAFINA!, Buzani Kubawo, and Once On This Island. Known for blending African storytelling with musical theatre energy, Sakuba has created a production that celebrates imagination, identity, and empowerment. “Moana JR represents everything SSIPA stands for — empowerment, imagination, and the discovery of self-expression through the arts,” Sakuba says. “To see such young performers embrace this story of courage and connection is incredibly inspiring, especially as we mark our first production in Cape Town.”
Musical Direction comes from Kay Mosiane, whose impressive career spans stage and song. From starring in Chicago and Little Shop of Horrors to sharing the stage with icons like Sibongile Khumalo and Hugh Masekela, Mosiane’s musical touch promises to elevate this production into something truly special. The creative team also includes Robin Palm (Set Design) and Marianne Hilstead (Costume Design), who together with Sakuba, are crafting a world that’s as vibrant as Moana’s ocean journey.
But this show is more than just a festive treat — it’s a milestone. After four years of success in East London, SSIPA is expanding to Cape Town and Johannesburg, officially launching its Kids & Teens Programme with Moana Jr as its first local production. The institute’s goal is simple but profound: to nurture South Africa’s next generation of triple-threat performers — those who can sing, dance, and act their way into the nation’s heart.
So, if you’re looking for a family outing that brings together adventure, artistry, and the warmth of the holidays, Moana Jr is your destination. With only one week to catch it, this show is set to be the perfect blend of festive cheer and inspiring storytelling.
Performances run from 16 to 23 December (no show on 21 December) at Theatre Arts, located in the Methodist Church Hall on the corner of Milton Road and Wesley Street, Observatory. Tickets are R150 for adults and R120 for children or scholars. Book directly through theatrearts.co.za.
It’s the perfect way to spend time with the family, share a few laughs, and remind yourself that sometimes, finding your way starts with setting sail.
