Join The Masque this May for a celebration of the iconic TV show, “The Golden Girls”! For the first time in Cape Town, four episodes of the beloved programme have been adapted for the stage, running from 24th May to 1st June.
In case you’re not familiar, “The Golden Girls” is a classic sitcom from the late 80s and early 90s, following the lives of four mature women in Miami as they navigate the joys and challenges of their golden years. From the strong-willed Dorothy to the spacey Rose, the lusty Southern belle Blanche, and the witty matriarch Sophia, these characters may occasionally clash, but their bond is unbreakable.
Faeron Wheeler, Head of Programming at The Masque, reminisces, “The people who watched the show will fondly remember its catchy theme tune with the words ‘Thank you for being a friend’, which encapsulates the essence of this very popular series.” Audiences can expect to witness these legendary characters come to life again on stage, in a journey filled with laughter, irreverence, and moments of poignancy as they navigate their golden years.
Wayne Ronné, who has adapted and directed the show, reflects on the impact of “The Golden Girls,” stating, “Watching the Golden Girls in the 80s was just about entertainment and not realizing how much of an impact the ladies had on society.” Featuring a talented cast including Gwendolen Ward, Tanya Smith, Katherine Fillmore, and Kerith Coulson, this production promises to be a delightful experience for fans old and new.
