The life and times of legendary anti-apartheid hero, Oliver Reginald Tambo, is set to come alive at the South African State Theatre (SAST) in Pretoria from 23 to 26 March 2023. Directed by Ntshieng Mokgoro and featuring Ntsika Ngxanga (The Soil) as the music director, “Sikhahlel’u OR – A Tribute to Oliver Reginald Tambo” is an awe-inspiring stage adaptation of Professor Mongane Wally Serote’s acclaimed poem.
Born in Mbizana, Eastern Cape, OR Tambo left an indelible mark on South Africa’s history, serving as the president of the African National Congress (ANC) from 1967 to 1991. This stage production captures Tambo’s journey from his humble beginnings to his pivotal role in the struggle for freedom, along with his inspiring vision for the nation.
The play also honours the sacrifices of many other struggle heroes who laid down their lives for liberation. As South Africa continues to grapple with its past and forge a path toward a brighter future, “Sikhahlel’u OR” serves as a timely reminder of the true cost of freedom.
Brought to life by a talented cast, including Harriet Manamela (Skeem Sam), Thokozani Mthiyane, and Thabo Ramaine, the production is a result of a partnership between SAST and the National Poet Laureate Hub. Prof. Serote’s poem was first published in 2019 and received widespread praise, with former President Thabo Mbeki describing it as “an immensely creative work of love.”
Sadly, OR Tambo passed away on April 24, 1993, at the age of 75, just one year before the historic 1994 general election that saw Nelson Mandela become South Africa’s first black president. Prof. Serote’s poignant words continue to resonate today, as he asks, “OR, if you were here in this time of history, what would you say, what would you do?”
“Sikhahlel’u OR” is more than just a stage play; it is a heartfelt tribute to a man who dedicated his life to the cause of freedom and equality.
