In the heart of Centurion, the familiar hum of bustling city life is punctuated by a unique melody. A striking blend of harmony and passion, the voice behind it is as unexpected as it is captivating. Meet Tiaan Massyn, the 29-year-old optometrist who’s taking the phrase ‘seeing is believing’ to a whole new level.
More than just a man with a stethoscope, Tiaan is a healthcare professional on a mission to change lives, one set of eyes and one song at a time. Owning and managing two successful practices in Pretoria’s Rooihuiskraal and Eldoraigne, he’s your go-to eyecare specialist by day, and an aspiring singer-songwriter by night.

Finding solace in his songwriting, Tiaan juggles the strains of his profession with the joys of music. His love for people and family fuels his aspirations, even though he admits to being a newbie in the music industry. “I am completely out of my comfort zone, but am determined to broaden my horizons,” he confides.
With the help of well-renowned vocal coach Jolanda Becker, Tiaan has honed his vocal skills. A transformation that has led him from singing only in Grade 6 classrooms to recording a debut single that is guaranteed to give you goosebumps.
When you listen to his debut single, ‘DIE SON KOM OP’ (The Sun Rises), you’re welcomed into a world of heartfelt melodies, woven together by an extraordinary voice. Co-written with his brother-in-law, Ernes Smit, a CA with a soft spot for poetry, the song was crafted over a bottle of wine and then given to Jattie de Beer of Artistry Productions to sprinkle his magic.

‘DIE SON KOM OP’ encapsulates the struggles and resilience amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, a testament to the trials Tiaan has witnessed through his work as an optometrist. This track serves as a beacon of hope, a testament to human endurance and a rallying call to live every day to its fullest, seizing opportunities and making music.
Tiaan’s dream was to create a song that South Africans could identify with and lean on amidst life’s challenges. He believes that the hardships of Covid-19, felt by himself and those around him, were eye-opening experiences that needed to be shared.
His ability to marry meaningful lyrics with a unique melody has resulted in a piece that will undoubtedly strike a chord with listeners of all ages. And, as we eagerly await the accompanying music video and his promising undisclosed projects, Tiaan remains optimistic about the future.
His parting words? “To be able to see is the greatest gift from God and I can make a difference in someone’s life every day. Look, the sun is rising!” A perfect encapsulation of the spirit of Tiaan Massyn, the singing optometrist from Pretoria, who is indeed making a difference, one tune at a time.
